Erika Schmitt grew up in the mountains of Virginia but loves anything to do with the ocean. She has a BA in Biology with minors in environmental studies and German from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a MS in Marine Science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William & Mary. After spending graduate school snorkeling in the Chesapeake Bay conducting research on seagrass and bay scallops, she decided to pursue her passion of working with children and came to the Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island as an environmental educator. This solidified her love of teaching and led her to St. Andrew’s, where she is excited to share her love of the natural world with lots of hands-on experiences. When she’s not teaching, Erika loves doing anything outside, yoga, reading, and playing the piano.
