St. Andrew’s has been in person all year with the option of students taking classes remotely. A member of the class of 2021 shared some of his thoughts on the year as a remote student.

The past year has been insane for most people across the world. But, speaking as a student who has stayed home for most of it, it’s kind of a blur. I am taking all my classes as a hybrid student through zoom. It is never fun being on your own for long periods of time, but actually this year has felt so short. People always say, “Your senior year will fly by,” and it really has. Staying home definitely added to that effect and rushing through a tough year is probably the best part of this experience. But it’s obviously also the worst part, I don’t have the interactions and experiences that make the year feel real. Even if it seems mundane at best, those small real moments are what truly make the high school experience so exciting and memorable.
A great example of that disconnect between myself and the standard high school experience is when I hear laughing in the background of a class or when my friends text me about something that happened at school today. I’m just so far away and disconnected from everything that’s happened this year. My senior year has mostly been assignment work and Netflix. Even applying to college and seeing students laughing and interacting seems foreign to me. Which is why I’m glad I got the first dose of the vaccine. I’m really eager to readjust, regain some normalcy, and reconnect with my friends in person.
